Measuring to fit inside your window recess

Inside recess measurements

• Fits inside your window recess for a neater appearance

• Make sure your recess is deep enough to accommodate your blind
• If your recess is partly tiled – measure the top of the recess and again between the tiles, then compare the two measurements. If the difference between them is less than 18mm – use the measurement at the top of the recess. If it is more than 18mm either use the measurement between the tiles, or reduce the top of the recess measurement accordingly for a closer fit.

Take three measurements across the width and height, as shown on our measurement guidelines, and use the shortest measurement you have taken when ordering your blinds.

Cassette Roller Blinds

When you order a cassette system, the width you order is the overall blind width including the cassette – the blind roller assembly fits within the cassette profile. We will deduct 10mm from your width measurement when ordering a cassette system to be fitted inside the window recess. This is to ensure the cassette profile fits comfortably within the window recess area (there will be a 5mm gap at either side of the cassette profile when fitted). When ordering an outside recess fit, the cassette width supplied is the exact width ordered (no deduction).

Outside recess measurements

• Fit outside your window if your window recess is not deep enough to fit your blind
• Make sure you account for the amount of fabric you want to overlap the window recess edges

• Fit outside your window if your window recess is not deep enough to fit your blinds
• Make sure you account for the amount of fabric you want to overlap the window recess edges

Take the height and width measurement, as shown on our measurement guide, taking into account how much fabric overlap you would like over the window recess.

Use a metal tape measure for accuracy.

• Decide if your electric curtain track will be fitted within the recess or outside of.
• Factor in the fabric stack (the gathered fabric when your curtains are open) when deciding your track length.

Inside or outside window recess

If you choose to fit your curtain tracks inside your window recess, please deduct 2cm from the window width measurement you supply to ensure that the track fits within the recess. (Please note, curtains fitted inside the window recess will cover a portion of your window opening when they are drawn apart.)

When fitting curtain tracks outside of the recess, please consider the fabric stack and allow for clearance, if required, when specifying your width.

Bi-folding door blinds

When measuring for multiple roller blinds within a door opening, we would normally advise taking tight measurements with no gap allowance as the blinds can be fitted side by side with no gaps between them. However if you would prefer to allow a degree of tolerance to ensure the blinds fit, then allow 5mm between systems.

With cassette systems, we deduct 10mm from the width measurement ordered when inside recess fit is selected as the fit type – this is to reduce the profile width to ensure it will fit within a typical window recess. When fitting multiple blinds within an opening, this reduction per blind offers enough fitting tolerance to ensure the profiles fit with some room for manoeuvre.

We would advise to take the measurements the following way (example of a three blind system):

• Measure from the left side wall recess to the centre point between panes 1 & 2 (Width #1)
• Measure from the centre point between panes 1 & 2 to the centre point between panes 2 & 3 (Width #2)
• Measure from the centre point between panes 2 & 3 to the right side wall recess (Width #3)
• Widths #1 + #2 + #3 = Total recess width

Also factor in skirting boards if fitted at floor level – it is not always necessary to reduce the blind width to account for the skirt, but should be considered.

With the standard system, there is a fabric gap of 18mm at both sides – we would recommend that you reduce the blind width by 10mm to allow the recess side bracket to be fitted 10mm inset relative to the recess wall. This will result in the fabric edge clearing the recess wall by 28mm (10mm reduction + 18mm fabric gap). If the skirt projects 22mm, then there will be a 6mm clearance based on this scenario.

With the cassette system, there is a fabric gap of 16mm at the non-motor side and 23mm at the motor side – if the motor side is positioned at the recess wall end where the skirt is located and the blind has a 10mm reduction due to inside recess fit, then the fabric edge will be 33mm away from the recess wall (10mm reduction + 23mm fabric gap). If the skirt projects 22mm, then there will be a 11mm clearance based on this scenario.
